The Land Breakers John Ehle Linda Spalding 9781590177631 Books

John Ehle is not given enough recognition for being one of the foremost Southern writers. Most of the books are based on country life of long ago in the North Carolina area. He focuses on fiction that reads like non-fiction. His knowledge of that time and its people seems exhaustive and his down to earth, rich prose makes him a joy to read.
This is a story of the settling of virgin mountain land in the late 1700s by a small group of settlers. There is romance, heroics, backbending labor, family relationships, compassion, and a liberal share of heartaches. You must read Ehle. He's a master.

The Land Breakers John Ehle Linda Spalding 9781590177631 Books Reviews

The Land Breakers is a rich, highly satisfying novel, with fully developed and compelling characters set cinematicaly in the 18th century history of the North Carolina mountains. I agree with the high praise other reviewers have given the novel and only wish that I had found it earlier and that other Ehle novels soon become available in format.
The book creates a believable mountain pioneer world in fine detail about everything from cabin building to fabric dying to herbal medicine. Exciting, emotionally resonant, and beautiful. The book requires some patience and persistence that mirrors the willpower and love the land--with full experience of its dangers and the threat of lifelong poverty--of its characters.
The Land Breakers is a haunting tale of the 1700’s pioneers who settled in the mountains of North Carolina. Filled with tales of despair and desperation, the characters are beautifully crafted and magically real on the page. Strong women, who toiled alongside their men, are an important part of this story. Inspiring and at times heartbreaking, this tale will make you proud to have Appalachian heritage.
The writer, who died this year, 2018, as a exceptionally gifted, but more, you can see that the mountains were bred into him. This is the kind of deep knowledge that can never be acquired by research alone, but only by living a life with eyes and senses wide open.
Not a false note in this sweeping story about settling the mountains of VA in the late 1700's. John Ehle is an immensely gifted writer who captures life in the moment like few others. Would have never known about him had I not come across his obituary in The NY Times on 4/13/2018.
This is a writer that deserves more popularity and readership then he has. His books are all accessible, original, funny, lyrical and achingly true. Historical fiction at its best. He never once glamorizes his subject or gives it a Hollywood treatment. These are real people struggling with real problems and find experiences and solutions that will tug at your heart long after you close the book. This is the first in the series of seven or eight books about several families that settled in the Appalachians in North Carolina. The Land Breakers occurs during the Revolutionary war. The second novel, the Journey of August King, occurs in 1810 or so and is the most unusual and complicated treatment of slavery and it's impact on the slaves, the Masters and those who stood by, that I have ever seen. The Time of Drums, a Civil War novel and The Road, about the building of the railroad through the mountains, are both fascinating and over whelming. The other novels in the series are Lion on the Hearth, the Winter People, Last One Home, and (possibly) The Widow's Trial. I have not read these yet but Amjust beginning Lion/hearth.
The Land Breakers is a great book by a master of fiction writing. Like The Road, The Land Breakers is a breath-taking achievement. Ehle deserves recognition as one of America's top novelists ever. Why didn't he receive more significant acclaim during his life-time? Perhaps critics pigeonholed Ehle as a regional writer of historical fiction. Or perhaps he was a victim of eastern elitism. Whatever the case, he belongs on the reading lists of high schools, universities, and the general public. If you haven't read John Ehle yet, you're in for a treat.
