After reading this book, I have noticed the use of several of the techniques described in Chart Throb in such shows as American Idol, Hell's Kitchen, etc. These manipulations are not secret or mind-blowing, but it is fun to play spot the "Frankenstein". (A scene cobbled together from many scenes but presented as a single conversation/confrontation.)

Ben Elton seems to have it in for "Reality Programming" as his other book, "Dead Famous", is a murder mystery set in a "Big Brother"-like house and is arguably a better book.

It reads a little like a detective. Good characters. I can never see this kind of programs again without thinking about how it all works.
It's not quite as good as High Society (which is basically a biog of Robbie Williams!) but a good read.
Ben Elton just doesn't write bad books. His wit never fails and he depicts the characters with precision. He has yet to disappoint me, and I've read many of his books.
This book reminds us how American Idol is probably scripted. Ben's book "Gasping" is much better. He uses a lot of satire in his books but this one did not appeal to me. Too much cruelty.
The subject was very current and detailed. A bit alarming as it just goes to show that you can't believe what you see. The way that the contestants etc are treated by all involved and the distortion of the truth, manipulation and the willingness of the contestants to go along with it to achieve their dreams is a worry. Almost an educational book!
Good Ben Elton stuff. At times wildly funny but with a quite sad message to the kids who are exploited by such rubbish shows as The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent and the people who run them
My eyes have opened to a new (hidden) world. Who would have known that that 'idol' industry was so contrived and scripted. I loved every minute of it. Yes, the story is larger than life - with the most ridiculous names for characters. But I think this adds to the craziness of the business. Brilliant, life-changing read.
